Lecture 4: Orbitals and energetics

This lecture covers fundamentals of electron orbitals and energetics in chemical bonding with examples provided for d and f metal.  The point group of molecules is reviewed with examples provided. Correlations between bonding and structure are provided with point groups for different coordination numbers explored. Bonding based on molecular orbital theory is given and linked to ligand field theory is reviewed. Charge transfer in metal-ligand interaction is discussed.  The utility of spectroscopy in evaluating electron interactions in bonding is presented. The lecture supplies a fundamental understanding of the chemical interactions germane to radionuclide complexes and should act as a review for students.

The homework can be e-mailed or returned on 7 October.
